About the FINDRISC Score

This calculator uses the Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISC), one of the most validated tools for Type 2 diabetes risk assessment. It was developed by the Finnish Diabetes Association and has been validated in multiple European population studies.

A FINDRISC score of 15 or higher identifies people with a 1-in-3 chance of developing Type 2 diabetes within 10 years, making it a practical screening tool recommended by the WHO.

Can Type 2 Diabetes Be Prevented?

For people with prediabetes or high risk, Type 2 diabetes is largely preventable. Large clinical trials (like the Diabetes Prevention Program) showed that lifestyle changes reduce risk by 58% — more effectively than medication.

Key preventive measures include losing 5–7% of body weight if overweight, getting 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, eating more fiber and less refined carbohydrates, and quitting smoking.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes?
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body attacks insulin-producing cells. It is not preventable and requires insulin therapy. Type 2 diabetes develops when cells become resistant to insulin, often related to lifestyle factors. It can often be prevented or delayed with lifestyle changes.
What is prediabetes?
Prediabetes means blood sugar is higher than normal but not yet in the diabetic range (fasting 100–125 mg/dL). Many people with prediabetes have no symptoms. Without lifestyle changes, prediabetes often progresses to Type 2 diabetes within 5–10 years.
Does a high score mean I will definitely get diabetes?
No. A high FINDRISC score indicates elevated risk, not certainty. Many people with high scores never develop diabetes, especially if they make lifestyle changes. The score helps motivate proactive health checks and lifestyle improvements, not create worry.
